This volume introduces Iranian visual culture and its history of graphic design over the last century by presenting a long-term field study on both the history and identification of matchboxes. Dating back to the final years of the Qajar dynasty, a period that is essentially contemporaneous with the first serious sparks of the modern movement in Iran, the matchbox has been considered an important, essential, and ubiquitous commodity in contemporary Iranian culture. The survey undertaken by Shahrouz Mohajer mainly concentrates on matchboxes produced prior to the 1979 revolution, and generally examples with hand-drawn or non-digital graphics have been given preference.
