Recorded during their first tour of England, Good Thoughts, Bad Thoughts captures France in full, immersive flight at The state51 Factory in East London. Long revered for their singular fusion of electrified hurdy-gurdy, bass and drums, the Valence trio channel kraut, psych, folk and drone into a slow-burning, trance-inducing performance that feels both ancient and exploratory. Formed two decades ago, France have always operated as a physical and mental experience, and this set documents that ethos with striking clarity. For the session, Jérémie Sauvage (bass) and Yann Gourdon (electrified hurdy-gurdy) are joined by Cyril Bondi on drums, pushing deep rhythmic cycles and resonant textures into hypnotic, communal territory. The result is music that invites movement while quietly unsettling perception, echoing the band’s long-standing fascination with altered states and collective energy. The recording is steeped in a spirit of openness and creative resistance, underscored by Hugo Hyart’s cosmic visual artwork and a subtle nod to a Parliafunkadelic mindset of unity and motion. Tracked live by James Crump and later mixed at Hot Chip’s East London studio, the album was mastered by Richy Hughes at Binary Feedback, preserving the raw intensity and spatial depth of the performance.
