Picking up where 2024's 'Trash Can Lamb' left off, Keith Freund blurs the line between acoustic instrumentation and DIY electronics on his latest full-length, unraveling his gentle, jazzy sessions with 8-bit beats and oddball FX. Since the beginning, Freund has been fixated on the character of a sound rather than what that sound, on its own, might represent. His piano parts rarely come off as if they've been played by hand; after chopping them to shreds, he inevitably reconstitutes them into player-piano style impossible sequences, re-organizing the notes and re-sculpting the tone completely. On 'Over Sidewalk Bryum', for example, it's the piano that provides the track's rhythm, accented by radio interference and bit-crushed oscillations. And although Freund does less chipping at his horn parts, letting the sax soar over the chattering electronics, it's still subtly tweaked - nothing's ever quite what it seems. A swamp of discarded blips and glitches help prop up 'I'll Find a Place for Us', and Freund's soft woodwind tones make their way through the noise initially - or at least that's what we're supposed to think. In time, Freund's sax emerges and the soft-hued, woodwind-like sound is revealed to be a red herring. But that's the kind of sleight of hand that Freund seems to revel in, creating glitchy, unstable music from soft, placid sound sources, not the harsh digital detritus you'd expect to find on a Mille Plateaux disc.
