Rhythm & Sound See Mi Yah (2026 Repress)

In 2005 Rhythm & Sound capped their holy mountain catalogue with ‘See Mi Yah’, a 7 x 7” set and LP which completed a 10 year run of inspired dub productions with their purest offering to the form. At the time, younger ears to their music would be left perplexed by the lack of instrumental variation - but any others with a little knowledge of one-riddim set traditions knew it was their ultimate ode to roots reggae fundamentals, after respectfully messing with the style & pattern across the Burial Mix 10”s (as collected in ‘w/ The Artists’), and the more radical 12” mutations of the Rhythm & Sound series, proper, since 1996 (not to mention birthing dub house-techno before that). Seeing off the project in fine style, Ernestus & Von Oswald gave studio time to their favourite vocalists, generating a slew of original performances displaying the range and depth of roots reggae’s elders and contemporary torch carriers on their signature backdrop of air-trodding bass and powdered dub chords. We were blessed to distribute it in the UK at the time, so many of these cuts are hard etched to the memory, from the ghostly croon of Willi Williams’ title piece thru the gruff gravitas of Bobbo Shanti, the duet between Ras Donovan & Ras Perez, and of course Sugar Minott’s mellifluous reggae soul. In the year following ‘See Mi Yah’, Rhythm & Sound were naturally elected to edit and master a re-up of The Congos & Friends’ one-riddim album ’Fisherman Style’ for our then warehouse neighbours Blood & Fire Records, sealing their era of roots reflection by appropriately saluting the originators, in parallel to their Wackies reissue scheme, and before Ernestus (and Mark Ainley) would go on to found the more digi-devoted reissue label, Dug Out. Some 20 years of satisfaction later, time has proven this album holds its meditative weight.
