Master Wilburn Burchette Occult Concert

Originally released on rockabilly artist Jimmy Bowen's short lived Amos imprint in 1971, 'Occult Concert' was nothing of the sort, recorded at Los Angeles' Dimension Sound studio in a seven hour session. Because Amos was the first label to react to one of Burchette's demo tapes; he'd sent similar recordings off to Columbia and Paramount, who apparently both responded in their own time, but Bowen's was the first so Burchette went with Amos. And he lugged his DIY setup (his custom-built guitar and bespoke FX) to the studio, spent a good three hours setting his equipment up and then just played, dubbing the first proper example of material he'd spend the next few years hawking via the back pages of US mags like Gnostica News and Beyond reality, attaching his jams to a seven-part "Psychic Meditation Course", 'cause why not. 1973's 'Guitar Grimoire' is the pick of his solo guitar gear, but there's plenty for dedicated weirdos here that spotlights the very beginning of Burchette's narrative arc. Since it's his first record, it's the first evidence we have of the US guitarist's signature style while it was still very much in flux. Before this point, he'd been a classical guitar teacher and independently had developed a technique that prioritized vibrations rather than riffs. And you can hear just how that was beginning to sound here as Burchette plays without accompaniment, following medieval patterns, blues and pop motifs and unique invocations until he hits on a groove that taps into his very specific point of view. It's gear that wouldn't be shadowed until years later; if you're into Florian Fricke's later work or the psych private press zone, this'll be indispensable of course.
