Kangding Ray’s award winning soundtrack for Oliver Laxe’s Sirāt is a gripping accompaniment to an equally harrowing film, but it’s also a pretty gnarly Kangding Ray album by itself. Tracking a man’s journey into the Moroccan deserts to find his lost daughter among an entourage of ravers, Sirāt centres dance music in the unlikeliest of places, where throbbing trance stabs ring muffled through dust clouds before erupting in hyperventilating shuffles and serrated pulses. The bass is ablaze, the ambience churns with guttural texture, and liquid arpeggios bubble while brassy drones underline them with tense emotion.
