Valentina Magaletti (Raime, Moin, CZN, Tomaga) plays the porcelain objects of Yves Chadouët with incredible, sometimes terrifying results. ‘Batterie Fragile’ documents Magaletti coaxing a spectrum of precisely pointillist rhythms and more unusual, quietly animist tonalities from playing sculptures conceived by Yves Chadouët under the expertise of Marjorie Thébault and Justine Nicolas, Jessie Derogy, Guy Meynard and Hadrien Venat. With inimitably fleet hands, Magaletti makes the sculptures pulse, sing and moan on two extended improvisations, recalling the myriad traditions of percussive practice that Magaletti has absorbed over the years, from Indonesian gamelan to West African rhythmelodies, in a way that at this point is almost instantly recognisable as her work - such is the specificity of her style. Magaletti beats out rhythms with chopsticks on fine china to the alarm of a mother in the next room, while the family dog croons along in unison - or at least that’s what it sounds like. It’s on the finest line between the sort of performance heard in Mark Fell’s works with Drumming Grupo De Percussão and simply natural - highly evocative - domestic pottering, and all the more uniquely engrossing for it.
