NWW repackage two definitive ‘80s EPs in a strong testament to their unfathomable range, pairing a psycho-rock collage starring JG Thirlwell with sides of avant folk mischief, skewed Denny-esue exotica and jazz-funk fusion Both EPs are hailed by fans and the band as milestones in their epic catalogue and stand out for their relative brevity and combinations of ideas. ‘Brained by Falling Masonry’ first emerged on L.A.Y.L.A.H. Antirecords – Belgium’s key, early home to Coil, C93, and NWW – in 1984, with a schizoid contrast between the psychotic rock ’n roll of its title tune, featuring a possessed JG Thirlwell and its mindblowing choral breakdown, contrasting the faraway folk banshees and eccentricities of ‘A Short Dip in the Glory Hole’. The other disc then twists to 1989’s whimsical ‘Cooloorta Moon’, circa years after his move to County Clare on Ireland’s west coast, where he channels passion for easy listening lounge jazz and exotica with typically queasy, noirish results in the title tune’s woozy groove, then steps out on a killer cut of post-industrial jazz-funk fusion powdery rue machine groove and layered with psychoactive effect. Straight up killer, this one!
