"Refracted, smothered, jazz-not-jazz hybrids from two of LA finest experimental musicians on the inaugural Full Bloom release via saxophonist Sam Gendel and multi-instrumentalist Josiah Steinbrick. A tale of two distinct halves, Mouthfeel / Serene amalgamates a range of textures with a subtle fusion of the organic and inorganic for an engaging multi-sensory experience that skirts the fridge of traditional jazz, minimal, percussive, improv and electronic styles whilst never fully submitting to any. The A-side ‘Mouthfeel’ focuses on loose, pitter-patter rhythms, infused with woozy swathes of synthesiser patterns and Gendel’s electronically treated, subdued horn finding spaces in between. The mood remains loose and easy-going, recalling a similar feel to the gauzy, impressionist lounge-like approach that underpinned Roméo Poirier’s sun-kissed future classic on Sferic, or a looser, more stoned, percussive-orientated Farben…but what we have here is unmistakably NEW. On the B, ’Serene’ presents two crisp, mouthwash-cool pieces of freeform, glassy, FM synth waltz - finding a sedate, amorphous midpoint between Sakamoto’s (under-appreciated) moment of float-tank ambience on the Fieldwork EP and an imaginary Asmus Tietchens / Hiroshi Yoshimura collaboration.
