Esta é uma das questões que Liebestod de Vasco Araújo nos suscita. Apresentada pela primeira vez em 2019, em Baku, no Azerbaijão, trata-se de uma instalação vídeo meta-operática. Duas lendas primordiais de amor trágico, perpectuadas na tradição oral e fixadas por poetas e trovadores há muitos séculos atrás, acabaram por dar o título a duas óperas emblemáticas. Tristão e Isolda e Leyli e Madjnun surgem lado a lado no seu filme, mostrando que, não obstante o “choque civilizacional” entre Ocidente e Médio Oriente - ou entre Cristianismo e Islão -, ambas constituem avatares de um mesmo arquétipo, senão de um mesmo modelo da psique humana. Liebestod - Amor e Morte explora o amor romântico, a paixão e a impossibilidade de os dois amantes estarem juntos. Esses assuntos são revelados através do prisma de entrevistas a psicanalistas do Azerbaijão e da Alemanha que examinam e comparam os enredos das duas óperas e respondem a uma série de questões colocadas pelo artista sobre a definição do amor, a projecção das dificuldades dos protagonistas na actualidade ou o aconselhamento profissional sobre como se deve agir quando a ilusão choca com a realidade. Combinado com letras profundas, música comovente e sinistras paisagens nocturnas de antigos cemitérios, castelo abandonado e florestas virgens, estas conversas mergulham o espectador na reflexão sobre se a morte é a única salvação para o amor eterno. No dia de abertura será lançado o livro da exposição: edição numerada e assinada pelo artista, com design da autoria de Maria João Macedo e Dário Cannatà e um ensaio de Bruno Marques. Ao tomar a forma (e função) de um libreto, esta publicação propicia, do ponto de vista conceptual e da recepção estética, uma estrita relação com a instalação vídeo, constituindo uma extensão da mesma." / (EN) Catalog for the “LIEBESTOD - Love and Death” exhibition by by Vasco Araújo "Why are we still the victims of the illusions and disillusions of romantic love? This is one of the questions raised by Vasco Araújo’s video and installation Liebestod. Shown for the first time in 2019 in Baku, Azerbaijan, this piece is a meta-operatic work. Two primordial legends of tragic love, preserved in the oral tradition and fixed by poets and troubadours many centuries ago, provided the title of two emblematic operas. Tristan and Isolde and Leyli and Majnun appear side by side in his film to demonstrate that despite the “civilizational clash” between the West and the Middle-East (viz. between Christianity and Islam), both constitute not only the avatars of the same archetype but perhaps of the same model of the human psyche. Liebestod - Love and Death explores romantic love, passion, and the impossibility of the two lovers being together. These issues presented through the identification prism of psychoanalysts from Azerbaijan and Germany who examine and compare the plots of the two operas and go through a series of questions raised by the artist about the definition of love, projection of the difficulties of the protagonists today, or the professional advice on how to act when the illusion collides with reality. Combined with deep lyrics, moving music, and sinister night landscapes of old cemeteries, an abandoned castle, and virgin forests, these conversations immerse the viewer in the thoughts on whether death is the only salvation for eternal love. On the opening, will be released an exhibition book: a numbered edition signed by the artist, with design by Maria João Macedo and Dário Cannatà and an essay by Bruno Marques. By taking the form (and function) of a libretto, this publication provides, from a conceptual point of view and aesthetic reception, a strict relationship with the video installation, constituting an extension of it."
